Highlanders Move On To Region IX
Quarter Finals
Rochester, N.Y.-
The Houghton Highlanders took another step forward towards the Region IX Final
Four knocking out AMC North Division Rival Roberts Wesleyan College in a penalty
shootout today, 3-2.
The game revealed few opportunities for either
team on the offensive end. The Highlanders also experienced an unfortunate
injury to starting goal keeper
So. Erik Lefebvre (Ottawa, ON Canada) who left the game with an arm
injury. His replacement goal keeper
Jr. Dan Miller
(Stanley, NY)
would end up being the deciding factor in a penalty shoot out.
Roberts Wesleyan were first to shoot in the shoot
out and had their first two attempts blocked by
Jr. Dan Miller
(Stanley, NY).
Houghton's first attempt by
Fr. Dan
Brubaker (Shippensburg, PA)
was also blocked. This
however was followed by three successful shots from
Jr. Josiah Snelgrove (Coldstream,
New Brunswick),
Sr. Ben Loos (Angola, NY)
and Jr. Tyler Haggerty
(Warren, NJ) which sealed the victory for the Highlanders.
The Highlanders will now play on Tuesday November
7th at Home on Burke Field against Daemen College at 7:00 pm. Winner of this
match will secure a Region IX Semi-Final birth.
Houghton College
has deep
and
solid
roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our
teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play
and
in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and
unique
emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference
for the Kingdom
on campus, in Allegany County,
in the Northeast and
around
the world.
Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected
by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door
for Houghton to be a leader,
both in the Northeast and
nationally, in character education.
Through hands-on,
innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and
student-athletes
are working together to change the culture of sport and
to change our culture through sport.
