Box Score

Houghton, N.Y. The Highlanders shut out opponent Daemen College tonight in the Region IX Quarterfinal Match 4-0.  The Highlander freshman lead the way offensively tonight scoring all four goals from four different freshman players. Sr. Dan Miller (Stanley, NY) made his first career start and had an outstanding game shutting out the Wildcats with 6 saves.

Early in the first half Houghton struck with a diving header by Fr. Jesse Woolsey (Houghton, NY) Jr. Josiah Snelgrove (Coldstream, New Brunswick) took a free kick that went to the top of the 18 yard box where Woolsey headed into the near low corner.  Just 14 seconds later, the Highlanders struck again.  This time the ball was crossed by Sr. Vince Wagner (Egg Harbor, NJ) to the far side of the 18 yard box where the ball landed in front of an unmarked Fr. Dan Brubaker (Shippensburg, PA) Brubaker collected the ball and calmly shot it low into the corner.  The third goal came from another diving header in the 34th minute when Snelgrove took a free kick outside of the 18 yard box.  The kick deflected off a Daemen defender into the diving Fr. Steve Ross (Auburn, NY) putting the ball in the back of the net.

The Highlanders continued to dominate in the second half, but recorded only one goal in the 76th minute when Fr. Jonathan Brooks (Ottawa, Ontario) scored off a penalty kick.

Houghton will now travel to Ohio to contest #1 Rio Grande on Friday at 11:00 AM at Rio Grande in the Region IX Semi-Final Match.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique

emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
