Rio Ends Men's Soccer Cinderella Run, 3-0

Box Score

Rio Grande, OH The Houghton Highlanders post season run was cut short by NAIA #2 Rio Grande University today, 3-0. The Highlanders played a brilliant first half allowing only one goal. Fr. Steve Ross (Auburn, NY) had two great attempts to level the score before the end of the first half.

Rio then assumed control of the match in the second half scoring their second goal off a cross into the keepers box and being finished on the back post. The third goal which sealed the victory for the Redmen was scored by AMC South Division All First Team, Guy Heywood.

The Highlanders will finish the season 6-10-3 overall. This is the first trip for Coach Webb to the Region IX Final Four since taking over the program in 2004.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique

emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
