Box Score

Houghton, N.Y. – Tonight’s match up at the Nielsen Center kicked off the 2006-2007 Houghton Highlanders Men’s Basketball season as they took on the #7 Walsh Cavaliers.   The Highlanders came out aggressively against the Cavaliers who are currently ranked #7 in the nation in the NAIA Men’s Basketball rankings and currently came off a preseason game against the Ohio State Buckeyes.  The Highlanders played the game with a packed out Nielsen Center crowd.

Leading the Highlanders in points was Sr. Corky McMullen (Castile, N.Y) who put up 10 points while fellow Highlanders Sr. Luke Mortenson (Greenville, N.Y) and Jr. Martin Axnick (Rahden, Germany) both had 9 points each.  Jr. Martin Axnick (Rahden, Germany) and Sr. Allen Goodman (Citra, Florida) each had 6 rebounds apiece in the Highlanders efforts to defeat the #7 Cavaliers.

The scoring bounced back and forth throughout the game with the #7 Cavaliers putting the first points on the scoreboard.  The Highlanders went ahead in the 7th minute of the game, 9-8 as Fr. Ahmed Abdelhamid (Auckland, New Zealand) hit a jumper however; the Cavaliers took a 9 point lead before the Highlanders were to score next.  The Highlanders aggressively went on the offense as Jr. Martin Axnick (Rahden, Germany) tied the game in the 16th minute, 20-20.  Fr. Ahmed Abdelhamid (Auckland, New Zealand) helped the Highlanders take the lead as he hit two free throw shots, 22-20.  The Cavaliers closed out the shooting in the 1st half scoring 11 unanswered points, 24-33.

In the second half the scoring went back and forth with each team aggressively shooting.  In the 15th minute So. Tyler Mutton (Brockport, New York) tied the game 39-39 with a 3 point shot as the Cavaliers came back with a 3 point shot to put themselves ahead only to be tied once again with a 3 point shot by Fr. Ben Kopp (Franklinville, New York) in the 13th minute, 42-42.  For the rest of the game the Cavaliers turned on their offensive power not allowing the Highlanders to tie them again.  The Highlanders came within 1 point of tying the Cavaliers three times in the last 11 minutes of the game.

The Highlanders next game is away versus Redeemer University at 7:00PM on Tuesday, November 21st.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique

emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
