Men's Basketball Loses on Road Against

                              Liberty, 92-46

Box Score

Lynchburg, VA- No one said it would be easy for the Houghton Highlanders to find success against NCAA Div 1. opponent Liberty University Saturday night losing 92-46.

The Highlanders knew going into this game that it would be an uphill battle for all forty minutes.

The game started slow  with both teams starting cold from the field. It was not until the flames scored first from the floor taking a (0-2) lead with 18:12 left. The Highlanders responded back immediately with a 3 pointer from Allen Goodman (Sr. Citra, Florida) to give the Highlanders their only lead for the match (3-2). The Flames jumped out to an early 5 point lead with 3 quick baskets displaying their superior athleticism over the Highlanders.

The Highlanders battled back scoring eight of the next fifteen points. Yannick Anzuluni (Fr. Ottawa, ON) finished the run with a lay up bringing the Highlanders within 4 points of the Flames (11-15) with 12:46 left in the half. The Highlanders would go scoreless for the next four minutes as the flames quickly extended their lead with a 21-0 run (11-36) before a 3 pointer from Corky McMullen (Sr. Castile, N.Y.) ended the drought (14-36). The Highlanders struggled to find any offensive rhythm going into the half (18-53)

In the second half the Highlanders dug in picking up the defensive intensity only allowing the Liberty University Flames to outscore the visitors by seven points. The Highlanders made major improvements defending the dribble and rebounding the basketball against a superior opponent.

"This was a great game for our guys to be a part of" stated Coach Zarges. "We saw improvement from all of our players, under intense pressure in the second half that looks really promising for the rest of the season."

Luke Mortenson (Sr. Greenville, N.Y.) had a game high 11 points and 4 rebounds for the Highlanders.

The Highlanders overall record moves to 1-2 with the next game away at NCAA Div. III Paul Smith College on Saturday December 2nd at 7:00 pm.
