Team Effort in Victory over Redeemer, 90-62

Box Score

Houghton, N.Y. While the temperatures begin to drop in Houghton, the Highlanders are beginning to turn up the heat.  With a 90-62 win over the Redeemer Royals, the Highlanders are not only above .500 with a 3-2 record, but are also on a 2 game winning streak.  Tonight’s win was a team effort with five Highlanders registering double digits.  The Highlanders had their best shooting performance of the year, shooting 57% from the three and 50% from the field.

The Royals opened the scoring in the first minute of play only to be answered by the Highlanders with a layup by Yannick Anzuluni (Fr. Ottawa, ON).  The Royals once again answered back taking the lead, only to lose the lead in under a minute as Martin Axnick (Jr. Rahden, Germany) hit a free throw to tie the game.  The Highlanders took the lead, 5-3 with a layup by Anzuluni.  The Highlanders never looked back going into the half with a 10 point lead over the Royals, 46-36.  The Highlanders opened their scoring in the second half with Anzuluni once again slipping behind the Royals defense with a quick layup.  The Highlanders highest lead over the Royals came in the 4th minute of play as Dan Tomlinson (Fr. Bloomfield, NY) tossed in a layup, 88-58.

Posting his second double-double of the year, Anzuluni led the Highlanders in total points and rebounds registering 14 points and 12 total rebounds, 4 offensive and 8 defensive.  Luke Mortenson (Sr. Greenville, N.Y) posted 12 points followed by both Ben Kopp (Fr. Franklinville, NY) and Corky McMullen (Sr. Castile, N.Y) registering 12 points each.  Axnick registered 4 blocks while So. Tyler Mutton (Brockport, NY) registered 8 assists.  Three freshman hit double figures in tonight’s contest with Anzuluni registering his double-double in total points and rebounds, Kopp registering 12 points and  Mada Abdelhamid (Fr. Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
