DAUGHERTY TO
PLAY BASKETBALL FOR HOUGHTON COLLEGE
(HOUGHTON,
N.Y.)—Standout Houghton Academy basketball player Shannon Daugherty signed a
letter of intent to play for Houghton College in a ceremony at the high school
yesterday.
Daugherty was a
second-team New York state all star selection the past two years and was the
Allegany County Birds’ Eye Player of the Year for 2006-2007. She won the Bob
Davies/Lou Fay Scholarship Award from Section V this year.
“We are very excited to add another
outstanding player to this year’s recruiting class,” said Harold “Skip” Lord,
head coach of the Houghton College women’s basketball team, “Shannon is a gifted
player, both athletically and intellectually.”
In her senior year
Daugherty’s 19.5 points and seven rebounds per game led the Panthers to the
finals of the Section V tournament. Daugherty earned a spot on the tournament
all-star team for the third time in her career.
Among the other honors Daugherty has
achieved are an appearance in the Ronald McDonald All-Star game, selection to
the Allegany County all-star team in each of the last
four years and reaching the 1,000-point mark for her career. She played for the
Hornell Hornets AAU club team.
Lord noted that Daugherty has “the
skills, size and athleticism to help us in several positions,” then added that
the Highlanders will likely use her as a small forward. “She has a great work
ethic and will fit very nicely into the ‘team-first’ approach we advocate,” Lord
added, “She is a student of the game and is always looking for ways to improve.”
Daugherty is the daughter of Dr.
David and Karen Daugherty of Houghton, N.Y. She intends to major in sociology
and intercultural studies at the college.
Houghton, founded by The Wesleyan Church in
1883, provides an academically challenging, Christ-centered liberal arts
education to students from diverse traditions and economic backgrounds. The
college of 1,200 students is located in western New York, just 65 miles from
Rochester and Buffalo. Houghton College has deep roots in the National
Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their
commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as
a platform for a strong and unique emphasis on sports ministry. Houghton is
one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve
as "Champions of Character" Program Centers. Through hands-on, innovative
community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes work
together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through
sport.
