Houghton’s Abdelhamid Heading to
World
University
Summer Games
Houghton, NY—You
might expect that one of the
NCAA Division I colleges in western New York would be sending an
athlete to the World University Summer Games, but a basketball
player from Houghton College, the NAIA school in Allegany County
with only 1,200 students?

That’s right, Houghton’s Mada Abdelhamid, a native of Auckland,
has been selected to the New Zealand men’s basketball team for
the games in Bangkok, Thailand, August 8–18.
Abdelhamid, who will be returning to Houghton for his sophomore
year this fall, was an Honorable Mention selection to the
American Mideast Conference North Division’s all star team and
was on the AMC North Division All-Freshmen Team in 2006-07. The
6’6”, 260-pound center started 24 games for the Highlanders and
saw action in all 25, averaging 9.6 points and 6.5 rebounds per
game.
The World University Summer Games are held every two years, with
competition staged in various cities throughout the world.
