Houghton’s Abdelhamid Heading to World University

                                  Summer Games

Houghton, NY—You might expect that one of the NCAA Division I colleges in western New York would be sending an athlete to the World University Summer Games, but a basketball player from Houghton College, the NAIA school in Allegany County with only 1,200 students?

That’s right, Houghton’s Mada Abdelhamid, a native of Auckland, has been selected to the New Zealand men’s basketball team for the games in Bangkok, Thailand, August 8–18.

Abdelhamid, who will be returning to Houghton for his sophomore year this fall, was an Honorable Mention selection to the American Mideast Conference North Division’s all star team and was on the AMC North Division All-Freshmen Team in 2006-07. The 6’6”, 260-pound center started 24 games for the Highlanders and saw action in all 25, averaging 9.6 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

The World University Summer Games are held every two years, with competition staged in various cities throughout the world.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
