Déjà Vu for Houghton and Madonna: a 0-0 Tie

Houghton, NY- Forgive these teams if they have a sense of déjà vu. For the third straight year the Houghton Highlanders and the Madonna University Crusaders played to a draw; the score Tuesday night at Burke Field was 0-0 after two overtimes.

In 2006 they tied 1-1 in Houghton and in 2005 the score was 0-0 at Madonna’s home field in Livonia, Mich. Both teams might well come away from this match pleased with the results. Certainly Madonna, unranked in the NAIA’s Top 25, should feel good about escaping an away game against the #5 Highlanders with a tie.

But Highlanders coach Dave Lewis was happy with his team’s effort, too. “Overall I’m pleased,” he said, “we played well. Madonna’s a tough team; they returned eight starters. I was pleased with our defense.”

The defense did play well, allowing Madonna few, if any, quality scoring opportunities. What offense the Crusaders could muster came predominantly in the first half, when they amassed eight of their 13 shots and six of their eight shots on goal.

As the teams battled through the second half and the overtimes the Highlanders controlled more of the play. They rang up 10 shots after the first half, six of them on goal, including the best chances of the night.

In the first overtime period junior forward Hannah Swift (pictured above) skipped a shot off the top of the crossbar and in the second overtime she forced Madonna goalkeeper Traci Anderson to come out and parry a turnaround effort.

The teams ended with 13 shots (eight on goal) apiece. Houghton had a slight edge in corner kicks, 5-3. Houghton has little time to ponder their effort; tough matches with Ohio Dominican University (ranked #21 in the NAIA’s preseason poll) and Missouri Baptist University await at ODU’s tournament this weekend in Columbus, OH.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
