Inexperience Undermines Start
of Highlanders Season
Rochester,
NY- Inexperience showed tonight as the Houghton College
Volleyball team went down in their season openers against a
tough pair of NCAA Div. 2 teams; Alderson-Broaddus College (WV)
3-0 ( 25-30, 21-30, 23-30) & Mercyhurst College (PA) 3-1 (31-33,
30-26, 19-30, 26-30) in the Roberts Wesleyan Volleyball
Tournament.
Highlanders Coach Nancy Cole expressed optimism about the
productivity shown this evening, however “there is a lot of
improvement to be made, with only two returning starters back we
are now looking to a number of our underclassmen to fill the
remaining starting roles... at times tonight we showed how good
we could really be.”
Highlander Senior Stefanie Swanson (pictured above) produced a
stellar performance against Mercyhurst College recording 35
digs, averaging 8.75 digs a game. The Highlanders put together a
solid effort with every Highlander contributing in both games.
The Highlanders will play tomorrow in the Consolation Round of
the Roberts Wesleyan Volleyball Tournament.
Houghton College
has deep
and
solid
roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our
teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play
and
in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and
unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference
for the Kingdom
on campus, in Allegany County,
in the Northeast and
around
the world.
Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected
by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door
for Houghton to be a leader,
both in the Northeast and
nationally, in character education.
Through hands-on,
innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and
student-athletes
are working together to change the culture of sport and
to change our culture through sport.
