Houghton College Women’s Soccer
Team Gets First
Victory of Season
Columbus,
OH—The Houghton College women’s soccer team didn’t waste
any time bouncing back from its first regular-season loss in
four years, beating Missouri Baptist 2-1 this afternoon at
the Ohio Dominican University Panther Classic tournament.
Junior
forward Hannah Swift (picture) tallied both goals within
minutes of each other and the goalkeeping tandem of Becky
Wakeman and Lauren Foster held off Missouri Baptist as the
Highlanders evened their season record at 1-1-1.
“The
women gave a very good effort today,” said head coach David
Lewis, “and their effort was rewarded with the win.”
Swift’s
first goal came on a sparkling individual effort in the 20th
minute when she took the ball from goalkeeper Meagan Roberts
on the endline then pulled it back out to the top of the
six-yard box, dribbling past three defenders before finding
an empty corner of the net.
Swift’s
second goal of the day came just a minute and a half later
when Rebecca Smith headed a Spartans clearing attempt back
into the penalty area. Swift collected the ball, made a
touch to clear herself of a defender and found open space on
the right-hand side of the goal. Smith received an assist on
the play.
The
Highlander’s held the 2-0 advantage until 2:12 remained in
the half, when the Spartans Amy Kelly took a pass from
Taylor Hay and slotted an 18-yarder that beat goalkeeper
Lauren Foster, just inside the post to the short side.
Foster
got the start in the net and made one save in the first
half. Lewis continued his practice of splitting goalkeeping
time, inserting Becky Wakeman for the second half. Wakeman
made one save and kept a clean sheet for her 45 minutes to
seal the win for the Highlanders.
The
Highlanders had 11 shots, seven on goal while the Spartans
had seven shots, only three of them on goal. Houghton had
eight corner kicks to three for Missouri Baptist. There were
two cautions given during the game: one to Missouri
Baptist’s Taylor Hay in the 15th minute and one
to Houghton’s Kaitlin Smith in the 82nd minute.
