Houghton Women’s
Soccer Team Ties Spring Arbor (MI)
1-1
Rochester, NY—The
Houghton College women’s soccer team took a 1-0 lead less than nine
minutes into the second half, but gave up a goal with just over eight
minutes left and settled for a 1-1 draw against Spring Arbor University
at the Roberts Tournament in Rochester Friday night.
Hannah Swift
scored for Houghton, with an assist from Andrea Duryea. Swift has scored
all three of the Highlanders’ goals this season.
“Both teams played
well,” said Houghton Head Coach David Lewis, “It could have gone either
way.”
It certainly could
have gone Houghton’s way if Swift’s right-footed drive in overtime
hadn’t hit the goalpost and bounced back out. That was one of Houghton’s
14 shots (to 12 for Spring Arbor). Corner kicks were 6-2 in favor of the
Cougars.
Becky Wakeman
played the first half for Houghton, turning aside four shots. Lauren
Foster played the second half and the overtimes; she had six saves and
gave up one goal.
The Highlanders
return to Rochester on Saturday for their second game of the tournament,
against the University of Mobile.
