Highlanders’ Swift Named NAIA Player of the Week

Houghton, N.Y.— Houghton College’s Hannah Swift has been named national offensive player of the week in women’s soccer by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The national organization followed the lead of the American Mideast Conference, which had given the junior striker from Perrysburg, N.Y., its weekly award on Tuesday.

Swift earned the honor with three goals and an assist in two games against ranked opponents as the Highlanders won one game and tied another last weekend.

Swift’s second-half goal on Friday, August 31, gave the Highlanders a 1-1 tie with 20th-ranked Spring Arbor (Mich.) University at a tournament in Rochester, N.Y.

The next day, at the same tournament, Swift struck twice against the University of Mobile (Ala.) Rams, ranked 19th in the nation. Her first goal, at 54:42, erased a 1-0 halftime deficit and her second, less than six minutes later, put the Highlanders ahead for good. The team went on to win 4-1, with Swift getting an assist on the fourth goal as well.

The goals gave Swift a total of five in as many games this season. Previously, she had scored both goals in the team’s 2-1 victory over Missouri Baptist.

Houghton takes a 2-1-2 record to Marion, Ind. this weekend to play in the Aflac Wildcat Classic. The team will face tough tests, taking on Lee University (Tenn.), the #3 NAIA team in the nation, on Friday evening at 5 p.m. and then the home team, Indiana Wesleyan University, on Saturday at 7:15 p.m.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
