    Volleyball Snaps 6-Game Losing Streak, Downing

                                  Pikeville 3-2

 

Houghton, N.Y.- Dealing with youth and inexperience is a tough job, but the women's volleyball team seems to be moving in the right direction after the first day of the 2007 Houghton College Fall Volleyball Tournament defeating the Pikeville College Bears 3-2 (27-30, 32-30, 30-13, 14-30, 15-5).

 

The Highlanders recovered from an early set loss only to rebound, taking control of the match. Offensively the Highlanders were led by AMC first team selection Holly Motheral who recorded 21 kills, and 1 block. Joining her tonight was Darby Emerson recording 11 kills, 1 block and 15 assists, Ashley Kuvshinikov with 8 kills, Lenore Bassett with 11 kills
and Leah Scott with 7 kills and 3 blocks.

 

Defensively Houghton was led by Meghan Phipps with an astounding 50 assists and 17 digs for the match and also Stephanie Swanson with 24 digs.

 

In the earlier day Houghton lost to Faulkner University 3-1, (22-30, 31-29, 23-30, 25-30). Holly Motheral recorded 19 kills, Leah Scott tallied 7 kills and 2 blocks, Meghan Phipps had 34 assists and 16 digs and Stephanie Swanson had 29 digs.

 

The Highlanders overall record now stands at 4-6 for the season and will face Notre Dame College and Pikeville College again at 10:30 am and 2:30 pm tomorrow during Day-2 of the 2007 Houghton College Fall Volleyball Tournament.
