 Houghton Men Remain Unbeaten

Nyack, N.Y.— The Houghton College men’s soccer team remained unbeaten, dominating St. Thomas Aquinas College (Sparkill, N.Y.) and winning 2-0 to open the Warrior Invitational tournament here Friday afternoon. Houghton’s record is now 2-0-2.

Freshman Johnny Kimani (pictured) opened the scoring at 24:58 on a breakaway. Dan Brubacher received the assist for making the pass that sprung Kimani.

Bryan Gerlach notched the second goal, at 79:18 in the second half, to make it 2-0 Highlanders (see picture at left). Aaron Martin assisted on that goal; it was his second assist of the season.

“We played very well defensively today” said Highlander Head Coach Matt Webb, “Erik [Lefebvre, Houghton’s goalkeeper,] wasn’t very busy.”

Lefebvre was credited with four saves in the game to seven for St. Thomas’ Michael Chappas. Houghton outshot the Spartans 19-4 and had eight corner kicks to none for St. Thomas. The Highlanders were also whistled for five offsides; St. Thomas Aquinas had none.

The Highlanders will conclude play at the Warrior Invitational on Saturday when they take on the host team, Nyack College at 1 p.m. Nyack defeated Concordia 1-0 on a last-minute goal Friday evening to up its record to 1-2 on the season.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
