Highlander Men Win 3-0, Take Warrior Classic Title

Nyack, N.Y.— The Houghton College men’s soccer team beat host Nyack College 3-0 Saturday afternoon to take the Warrior Classic tournament title and remain undefeated at 3-0-2.

Dan Brubaker scored the game winner (pictured at right) at 26:50 when he headed in a corner kick from Josiah Snelgrove. It was Brubaker’s second goal of the year and Snelgrove’s first assist.

In the second half, Nyack had several good opportunities to tie, but goalkeeper Erik Lefebvre made key saves to hold off the Warriors and preserve the lead (see picture, left).

“They pressured us and we got a little sloppy,” said Houghton’s Head Coach Matthew Webb, “but Erik came up big.” Lefebvre had five saves to earn his third consecutive shutout.

Johnny Kimani put the game away for the Highlanders with two goals less than seven minutes apart midway through the second half. At 69:56 Jonathan Brooks slotted a ball through to put Kimani in alone on goal and Kimani placed his shot past Warrior’s goalkeeper Ryan Kuiken.

Kimani beat Kuiken again at 76:48, taking a pass from Chris Davis and dribbling around Kuiken before tapping the ball home. That gave Kimani three goals in two days (celebration pictured below!) and earned Davis his first point as a collegian.

Kuiken, who got the start for Nyack when their regular keeper had to fly home for the funeral of his grandfather, made six saves.

“It was a good weekend,” said Webb of his team’s trip down state. The Highlanders beat St. Thomas Aquinas Friday afternoon, 2-0, before taking the tournament title today.

Houghton’s next game will be against Walsh University on Wednesday, September 19 at Burke Field in Houghton. The women’s team will play SUNY Canton at 5 p.m.; the men’s game will follow.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
