Volleyball Team Splits
at Taylor Tourney
Upland, Ind.—The
Houghton College volleyball team came away from the Taylor Trojan
Challenge even, splitting two matches Saturday after doing the same
Friday night. Saturday morning the Highlanders beat the University of
Illinois at Springfield 3-0 (30-25, 30-28, 30-26) and Saturday afternoon
they lost to Cedarville University 0-3 (20-30, 21-20, 20-30).
“It was a
good weekend,” said Head Coach Nancy Cole, “We played some good teams
and fared better than I thought we would. Our freshman players are doing
a good job in stepping up to the challenge.”
One of
those freshman, Darby Emerson, had an all-around good match Saturday
morning with nine kills, two aces and 12 digs.
Emerson earned all-tournament honors for
her play in the team’s four matches.
Holly Motheral led the effort against UI Springfield with 13 kills and Meghan
Phipps had 34 assists. Stefanie Swanson had 11 digs while Lindsay Arndt
served three aces.
“I was
pleased with how they played against a very solid team,” Cole said of
the effort against Springfield. She was less pleased with the
afternoon’s match. “Cedarville is a good team,” Cole said, “but we
didn’t play very well, either.”
Emerson
had another solid match, recording nine kills and two aces. Swanson kept
busy with 16 digs and Phipps had 15 assists. Leah Scott added three
blocks.
The Highlanders record now
stands at 7-9. The team opens play in the American Mideast Conference on
Tuesday, September 18 when it hosts Roberts Wesleyan College (Rochester,
N.Y.) at 7 p.m.
