Women's
Soccer Team Wins Handily
Houghton,
N.Y.— Hannah Swift scored three goals, Amy-Kay Mitchell had a goal
and two assists and Mandy Lewandowski had two assists as the Houghton
College women’s soccer team defeated the SUNY Canton Kangaroos 8-0
Wednesday night at Burke Field.
Swift got her first
goal less than eight minutes into the game when Rebecca Smith’s pass
sent her in at the left post. Swift buried her shot hard and low.
Just 12 minutes later
the Highlanders struck again when Carolyn Tomlinson headed in a corner
kick. Lewandowski got the assist.
At the 38:44 mark,
Lauren Haggerty got her first goal of the year when she touched the ball
past two defenders and then drove a shot to the right of SUNY Canton
goalkeeper Brenna Sexton.
Almost exactly ten
minutes later Rebecca Smith made it 4-0 when Erin Ross’ cross from the
right side found her all alone at the far post and she headed it home.
Swift opened the
scoring in the second half—just as she had done in the first—when she
pulled the ball sharply to her left at the top of the penalty area to
shake a defender and sent a left-footed shot to the right corner of the
goal.
At 61:43 Amy-Kaye
Mitchell got the second goal of her college career, with Lewandowski
getting her second assist of the night.
Mitchell was again in
on the play—this time with the assist—when Swift got her third of the
night and ninth of the season at 67:28.
Erin Ross closed out
the scoring with a well-placed shot just under the crossbar at 80:17.
The win raises
Houghton’s record to 3-2-2; SUNY Canton is now 2-2. Houghton hosts
Carlow University at Burke Field on Saturday at 1 p.m.
