Houghton Men Take Down Rio Grande, 2-1
(Rio
Grande, Oh.)—The Houghton College men’s soccer team defeated
Rio Grande University 2-1 on the Redmen’s home field
Saturday afternoon.
Johnny
Kimani (pictured, in a previous game) scored the first goal for the
Highlanders in the 33rd minute when he took away a poor
clearance by Rio goalkeeper Nate Walzer and converted it. Bryan Gerlach
got an assist on the play.
In the 40th
minute Dan Brubaker made it 2-0, scoring on a corner kick from Josiah
Snelgrove.
After
halftime, Houghton withstood repeated attacks by Rio. “They threw
numbers forward in the second half and we defended the lead,” said
Houghton Head Coach Matthew Webb.
It almost
wasn’t enough, as Rio’s Nick Hewison scored in the 55th
minute and then Rio pressed even harder. “[Houghton defenders] Chris
Davis, Tyler Haggerty and Justin Farnsworth just played unbelievable,”
Webb said, “and [goalkeeper] Erik Lefebvre was great.”
Webb
admitted that Rio may have had more of the play—especially in the second
half—but “we managed to win,” he said, “They [the team] weathered the
storm.”
Lefebvre
faced 25 shots, 13 on goal and had 12 saves. Houghton was credited with
eight shots, five on goal. Walzer had three saves.
The
Highlanders, who improved their record to 4-0-3, will host Notre Dame
College at Burke Field next Saturday at 5 p.m.
