Volleyball Team Beats Carlow, But Falls to Notre Dame

Houghton, N.Y.- The Houghton women's volleyball team split a pair of matches today in an AMC North Division tri-match series, beating Carlow College 3-0 (30-16, 30-16, 30-20) and falling to Notre Dame College 3-0 (28-30, 23-30, 21-30).

The Highlanders gained their first win in AMC North Division Conference play by beating the Carlow College Celtics. Holly Motheral recorded 13 kills for the match, she was joined by Darby Emerson (pictured at right) with nine kills and Lenore Basset with eight kills. Defensively Stefanie Swanson had 14 digs, Leah Scott added four blocks and Megan Phipps tallied 29 assists.

Notre Dame College (NDC) would be a different story. The Falcons swiftly took control of the match, frustrating the Houghton offense and keeping the defense on its heels. Darby Emerson continued to show a solid all-round effort recording 10 kills and 26 digs. Lenore Basset and Holly Motheral had nine kills each. Megan Phipps posted 30 assists, 10 digs and two blocks.

"We're young," said Highlander Coach Nancy Cole. "Every day is another step... by the mid-point of conference play, they'll have the experience needed to make that next major leap."

The Highlanders move to 8-11 overall, 1-2 in AMC North Division Conference play. They are back in action September 25 on the road against AMC North Division opponent Daemen College; game time is 7:00 pm.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
