Austin Hired As Women's Basketball Assistant

Houghton, N.Y.- Kevin Austin has been named assistant women's basketball coach and special projects coordinator for athletics at Houghton College, Houghton Athletic Director Harold Lord announced today.

Austin, an NAIA All-American in his playing days, returns to his alma mater after serving as senior pastor at Long Lake (N.Y.) Wesleyan Church since 2003. During his time there he served as boys' assistant varsity coach in basketball, soccer and baseball for Long Lake Central School.

Austin brings a wealth of collegiate experience to the table, having helped Houghton College to two National Christian College Athletic Association national soccer championships in 1979 and 1980. More recently he was head of the Global Partners/Wesleyan Church Sports Ministries, overseeing the "Isaiah 6 Project" in recruiting college students and youth workers for sports - specific ministry trips to Germany and to the Czech Republic.

His sports ministry background includes over 20 years managing missions organizations through 19 countries and over 200 sporting events overseas. He also played semi- professional soccer in Germany from 1991-94 and was in charge of youth development for his club team from 1994-95.

In his new position, Austin will assist Lord with the coaching and administration of the women’s basketball program, oversee special projects for athletics and work closely with the admissions office at Houghton College.

"We are very excited to have Kevin back at Houghton," said Lord. "He is a member of the Highlander Hall of Honor and is well-connected in Houghton circles. He understands the college and has great people skills, so he will be invaluable on the recruiting trail. He was our main contact in the Czech Republic during the first seven years of our sports ministry work there and is himself a pioneer in the field of sports ministry. I envision him playing a key part in our ever-expanding sports ministry work around the world. He was an outstanding athlete himself having played basketball, baseball and soccer at the collegiate level. He will be spending much of his time focusing his practice time on developing our guards."

Austin is married; he and his wife, Cindy, have five children: Kyle, Caleb, Benjamin, Brianna and Josiah.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
