Houghton Men’s Soccer Team Gains National Ranking

Houghton, N.Y.— The undefeated Houghton College men’s soccer team (4-0-3) has edged into the national rankings of the NAIA at the 24th position. It is the first time that the men’s team has been ranked since before the 2003 season began.

“It’s great,” said Head Coach Matthew Webb, “we play in a tough conference and so it’s good to have some recognition of what we have done in our pre-conference games.”

The Highlander’s 2-1 win at Rio Grande University last week caught some attention and helped propel the Highlanders up the rankings.

That game displayed the Highlanders’ strengths thus far: a stout defense and enough scoring punch to make them a threat.

Goalkeeper Erik Lefebvre, an NAIA All American (second team) in 2006, anchors the defense, which has given up just four goals in seven games and has three shutouts.

At the other end of the field, the Highlanders have scored 12 times, with a well-balanced attack. Nine Highlanders have goals or assists, led by freshman Johnny Kimani with four goals and sophomore Dan Brubaker who has three goals and an assist.

Houghton’s next game is Saturday, September 29, at 5:00 p.m., when they host American Mideast Conference (AMC) rival Notre Dame College. The matchup will feature the AMC offensive Player of the Week, Falcon’s forward Greg Carroll, against the AMC defensive Player of the Week, Lefebvre.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
