Houghton Men Fall to Notre Dame, 2-0

Box Score

Houghton, N.Y.— The Houghton College men’s soccer team’s unbeaten streak has ended as the Highlanders fell today to American Mideast Conference North Division rival Notre Dame College 2-0 at Burke Field.

The Highlanders gave up an early goal at 12:08 when David McCraig took a bouncing ball from teammate Jared Miller and drilled a shot from the top of the penalty area to the right of Highlander’s keeper Eric Lefebvre.

Despite the early marker the Highlanders pressed continually into the Falcon’s end and put offensive pressure on, especially near the end of the first half. The Highlanders enjoyed a 5-2 edge in corners and a 5-3 lead in shots at halftime, but they were down 1-0.

The second half continued the trend as Houghton pressed forward repeatedly but could not break through. Houghton had a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks. The Falcon’s defense withstood a total of 14 shots and repeated scoring opportunities but allowed only four shots on goal.

Notre Dame had eight shots, only three on goal.

At 68:59 the Falcons got an insurance goal when a Houghton defender let a cross from the Falcon’s Greg Carroll go past, mistakenly believing his goalkeeper was coming out for the ball. Jared Miller was there instead and tapped it in for the final tally.

Houghton’s first loss of the season leaves its record at 4-1-3 overall and 0-1 in the AMC. The Falcons are now 7-2-1 overall and 1-0 in the AMC. Houghton travels to Grantham, Pa. to take on three-time defending NCAA Division III champions Messiah College on Wednesday, October 3. Game time is 4:30 p.m.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
