Highlander Women Back in
National Rankings
Houghton, N.Y.—The Houghton
College women’s soccer team has
climbed back into the National
Association of Intercollegiate
Athletics’ national rankings.
Houghton has won four straight
games, all by shutout, to claim
the #25 spot.
Head Coach David Lewis’ team
started the year at #5 in the
pre-season rankings, but played
a difficult non-conference
schedule to start the season
2-2-2 and drop off the list
completely. The tough start
included a 4-1 loss to Lee
University, now ranked #1 in the
nation, and a 2-1 loss to Ohio
Dominican, now ranked #12. One
of the Highlander’s ties was to
Spring Arbor (Mich.) University,
which is now ranked 10th.
Since that start, the
Highlanders are 4-0, having won
lopsided victories over SUNY
Canton (8-0) and Carlow (8-0)
and closer contests against
Notre Dame College (1-0) and
Daemen (2-0).
The Highlanders put their
shutout streak on the line
Saturday at 2 p.m. against Point
Park University from Pittsburgh.
The game will be held at Burke
Field and is part of Houghton’s
Homecoming Weekend.
Houghton College
has deep
and
solid
roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our
teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play
and
in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and
unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference
for the Kingdom
on campus, in Allegany County,
in the Northeast and
around
the world.
Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected
by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door
for Houghton to be a leader,
both in the Northeast and
nationally, in character education.
Through hands-on,
innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and
student-athletes
are working together to change the culture of sport and
to change our culture through sport.
