Highlanders Volleyball Team Triumphs
Over Malone, 3-2

Box
Score
Houghton,
N.Y.- The Malone College
Pioneers entered today as
the top team in the American
Mideast Conference North
Division (AMC), but
were upset by a focused and
determined Highlander
volleyball team, 3-2
(19-30, 30-27, 30-20, 27-30,
15-6).
Houghton looked shaky early
on,
dropping the first set 19-30
in less than 20 minutes, but the
Highlanders pulled
themselves back together,
showing some of their best
play all season.
The Highlanders overcame a
close second set (30-27)
behind the leadership of
Holly Motheral
who dished out 25 kills
today,
and quickly used that
momentum to control the
third game,
too (30-20).
Malone answered back in the
forth game,
taking a giant lead early.
However Houghton showed its resolve
and staged a quick comeback
off some
good defensive work
by
Darby Emerson
who had 13
kills, two
aces and 22
digs for the afternoon. She
was joined by Leah Scott
with five
blocks,
many of those helping drive
that comeback. The
Highlanders fell just short
of the mark, 27-30,
forcing a fifth and deciding
game.
The final match was filled
with errors from both sides.
The Highlanders benefited
most, taking
an early lead and allowing
Malone's errors to give them
the needed points to close
out the game.
"Today we were a different
team," said Highlander Head
Coach Nancy Cole. "They
enjoyed themselves and
displayed some exciting
volleyball. It was fun to
see them play like a team."
"This was a big step in the
right direction on how we
want to finish this season."
This was the first time
since 2003 that the
Highlanders played Malone in
an AMC
game.
Other Highlanders
today;
Ashley Kuvshinikov
tallied nine
kills and four
blocks,
Brianne Brubaker had
22 assists and 13 digs,
Megan Phipps
also tallied 33 assists and
Stefanie Swanson
had 29 assists.
The Highlanders will play at
home again October 9 against
NCAA Div. III
opponent Elmira College.
Game time is 6:00 pm.
