Highlander Women Beat Point Park 2-0

Hannah Swift scores her 12th of the season to give Houghton College a 1-0 lead.

Box Score

Houghton, N.Y.—Houghton College’s women’s soccer team broke through a tough Point Park University defense twice near the end of the first half and coasted to a 2-0 win as the Highlanders celebrated Homecoming at Burke Field.

Hannah Swift got her 12th goal of the year at 27:30 of the first half when she ran onto a long ball from midfielder Mandy Lewandowski and broke in free on Point Park

Goalkeeper Emily Tomalewski. When Tomalewski came out to challenge her, Swift calmly sent the ball just inside the left post and Houghton led 1-0.

Just 14 minutes later, Jordan Green doubled the lead, off an assist by Andrea Duryea and the Highlanders went into the half leading 2-0.

In the second half, the Highlanders threatened repeatedly, but Tomalewski met every challenge. She turned back Hannah Swift at least three times on breakaways and went high in the air to tip a shot from Lewandowski over the bar.

In the second half alone the Highlanders pounded 17 shots, 12 of them on goal, but could not score. For the game, the Highlanders had 29 shots (19 on goal) to the Pioneers’ two (both on goal). Lauren Foster and Becky Wakeman each played a half in goal for the Highlanders, and each had one save. Tomalewski had 17 saves.

The Highlanders recorded their fifth straight shutout to improve their record to 7-2-2, while Point Park drops to 5-5. The Highlander’s next game is Saturday, October 13, when they travel to Malone College in Canton, OH for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
