Houghton Men’s Soccer Team Downs Mercyhurst 1-0

(Houghton, N.Y.)—The Houghton College men’s soccer team recorded its second straight 1-0 victory this afternoon at Mercyhurst College to improve its record to 6-2-3.

Defender Tyler Haggerty (pictured heading the ball in a previous game) came forward for a corner kick from Josiah Snelgrove and headed it home at 38:59 of the first half for the game’s lone tally. Houghton’s defense did the rest.

“We had a great defensive effort today,” said Matthew Webb, the Highlanders’ head coach, “and a good result.”

Houghton’s goalkeeper Erik Lefebvre had a big night, making eight saves to earn the shutout as Mercyhurst outshot Houghton 15-8 and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The Lakers drop to 5-7-2 with the loss.

The Highlanders travel to Canton, Oh., on Saturday to take on American Mideast Conference opponent the Malone College Pioneers, who are 5-7-1 (1-1 in the AMC). Game time is 3:30 p.m.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
