Swift’s Pair Paces Highlanders Women Past Malone

Houghton's Hannah Swift, #1 in black jersey, dribbles through Malone's defense

Canton, Oh.—The Houghton women’s soccer team got a pair of goals from Hannah Swift in the first half and made them stand up to beat American Mideast Conference (AMC) opponents Malone College, 2-1 Saturday afternoon.

Swift’s first goal came at 27:10, an individual effort where she wove through several defenders, took the ball to the end line, cut it back and then slotted it home to the right post.

Less than 10 minutes later, at 39:13, midfielder Casey Lawton sent a through ball which Swift ran onto and finished just inside the left post. It was Swift’s 14th goal of the season.

Houghton controlled play in the first half, and Malone pressed forward to have the better of it in the second half. At 59:06, they got one back with a shot that ricocheted off the post, hit goalkeeper Becky Wakeman and deflected in.

After that, “we were content to nurse the lead,” said David Lewis, Houghton’s head coach, and his team held on for its sixth straight win. Houghton’s record stands at 8-2-2, 5-0 in the AMC. Malone is now 7-7, 3-3 in the AMC.

Lauren Foster played the first half in goal for the Highlanders and recorded two saves. Wakeman played the second half and gave up the one goal and had one save.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
