Daemen
Beats Houghton
in Volleyball,
3-0
Houghton,
N.Y.— It's
the little
things that win
games.
For the
Houghton
volleyball team
it's been a
constant
struggle to find
consistency. The
Highlanders lost
to American
Mideast
Conference
opponent Daemen
College
tonight,
3-0 (27-30,
28-30, 25-30).
The
Highlanders took
the lead early
behind
Darby Emerson,
who struck
with three early
kills and
Jamie Hugelmeier's
serving touch
bringing in two
aces (14-9).
Houghton
stretched the
lead to as much
as seven points,
but blew that
lead when
a solid rally by
the Wildcats tied
the game at 22.
The Highlanders
swung the
momentum back in
their favor
extending a four
point gap
(26-22), but
crumbled at the
net allowing
Daemen to finish
the set on an
8-1 run (27-30).
The second set
stayed close
throughout the
first part
(8-8), however
Houghton failed defensively
midway through.
Every touch
seemed to fall
for the Wildcats, allowing Daemen
to take a nine
point lead
(16-25).
The Highlanders
mounted a
stunning
comeback off the
serving touch of
Jamie Hugelmeier
who tallied
three more aces
giving her five
for the match
along with 17
digs. She was
joined by a
resurgent
Holly Motheral
who delivered
ten of her 14
kills and four
blocks for the
match tying the
game at (28-28).
This was
overshadowed by
two devastating
service return
errors allowing
the Wildcats to
escape with the
second set
intact (28-30).
Houghton got out
of the gates
quickly (7-1) in
the third set
but the Wildcats
put together a
13-5 run to
overtake
the Highlanders and
build a
two - point
lead (12-14).
The Wildcats
took control
from that point
onward and
won 30-25.
Tonight the
Highlanders honored
seniors
Stefanie Swanson
and
Katie McCulloch
for four years
of service and
dedication to
Houghton College
and the women's volleyball program.
The Highlanders
will play again
on the road
October 20 in an
AMC tri-match
against Point
Park University
at 1:00 pm and
Ursuline College
at 3:00 pm. The
Highlanders fall
to 10-16 overall
for the season
and 2-5 in AMC
North Division
play.
Houghton College
has deep
and
solid
roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our
teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play
and
in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and
unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference
for the Kingdom
on campus, in Allegany County,
in the Northeast and
around
the world.
Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected
by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door
for Houghton to be a leader,
both in the Northeast and
nationally, in character education.
Through hands-on,
innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and
student-athletes
are working together to change the culture of sport and
to change our culture through sport.
