Yellowjackets Sting Houghton

Box Score

Houghton, N.Y.—The University of Rochester Yellowjackets swarmed all over the Houghton College men’s soccer team, scoring two goals in each half to take a 4-0 decision at Burke Field Friday night.

Steve Welles and J.J. Dennstedt teamed up for Rochester’s first two goals. At 29:48 the Yellowjackets took a corner kick that ricocheted off several players in the penalty area before coming to Dennstedt who tapped it to Welles for an easy putaway and a 1-0 lead.

With 45 seconds left in the first half, the pair struck again. Dennstedt had the ball on a two-on-one breakway, but was effectively maneuvered to the left side of the penalty area by a Houghton defender. Dennstedt turned and dropped a pass to the top of the box where Welles joined the play and hit a low hard shot just inside the left post.

Any thoughts the Highlanders had of coming back were snuffed out less than five minutes into the second half when the Yellowjackets scored again. Houghton Goalkeeper Erik Lefebvre parried aside a low shot with a flick of his left foot, but the rebound went right to Rochester’s Jeremy Mann, who sent it in.

Cliff White completed the scoring at the 74-minute mark when he scooped up a loose ball at midfield and broke in alone on Lefebvre. As the goalkeeper came out, White sent the ball past him to the corner and the score was 4-0.

Rochester dominated the stat. sheet as well, earning 13 corners to none for Houghton and outshooting the Highlanders 14-5.

Rochester goes to 11-2-1. Houghton is 7-3-4 and will play again on Tuesday at Daemen College at 3:30.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
