Highlanders’
Haggerty Named AMC
Player of the Week
Houghton,
N.Y.—Tyler Haggerty,
central defender on the
Houghton College men’s
soccer team, has been
named defensive Player
of the Week in the
American Mideast
Conference (AMC). The
AMC cited Haggerty for
leading the Highlanders
to a pair of 1-0
shutouts during the
week, including a win
against Mercyhurst where
he scored the game’s
only goal by coming
forward to head in a
corner kick.
Haggerty’s prowess on
head balls is a big part
of his defensive acumen,
according to Matthew
Webb, Houghton’s head
coach. “He’s so dominant
in the air,” Webb said,
“He’s made himself one
of the top defenders in
the conference.”
The 6’3” senior from
Warren, N.J., is the
second member of the
men’s team to win
defensive
player-of-the-week
honors this season.
Goaltender Erik Lefebvre
won the award in
mid-September.
Noting that his team has
been allowing fewer
goals this year—the
Highlanders have six
shutouts in 12
games—Webb cites
Lefebvre, but then adds
that “a great deal of
the credit is due to the
defenders in front of
him [Lefebvre], and
Tyler is a big part of
that. He has given
excellent senior
leadership to the
defense.”
Not
only is Haggerty the
second player on the
Highlander’s men’s team
to win a player of the
week award, he’s also
the second Highlander’s
player in his family to
win one.
Earlier this season
Haggerty’s sister,
Lauren, earned the AMC’s
offensive player of the
week award in women’s
soccer. Lauren, a
freshman midfielder for
the Highlanders, was
cited for scoring four
goals in two games that
week.
Tyler was named to the
AMC North’s First Team
last year for his stout
defensive work, and he
added three goals and an
assist. The goal last
week against Mercyhurst
was Haggerty’s first of
the 2007 season, to go
along with one assist.
As a result of his
conference honor,
Haggerty will be
nominated for the
national player of the
week award from the
NAIA.

nationally, in character education.
Through hands-on,
innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and

are working together to change the culture of sport and
to change our culture through sport.
