Highlanders Volleyball Show Improved Form But Fall Twice

 

Pepper Pike, Oh.-  Houghton's volleyball team continues to make steady improvements but dropped two matches today against American Mideast Conference opponents Point Park University, 2-3 (30-24, 25-30, 30-23, 22-30, 19-21) and Ursuline College, 1-3 (21-30, 30-27, 30-27, 18-30).

 

The Highlanders dropped the first two sets but rallied back to push Point Park University to a fifth set. "We played our best game yet this season," said Highlander Coach Nancy Cole. "They are a team that has had great success this season and I am pleased that we were in this game all the way to the end. I cold not be more proud."

 

Holly Motheral had 27 kills and 6 blocksDarby Emerson had a double-double with 15 kills and 17 digs and Leah Scott had nine kills and four blocks. Defensively, Stefanie Swanson posted another 31-dig performance. Megan Phipps had 33 assists and Brianne Brubaker posted 22 assists for the match.

 

Houghton had a tougher time against Ursuline Collegethoughlosing in four games. Holly Motheral continued to produce offensively with 15 kills and three blocks. She was joined by Darby Emerson who had an outstanding all-around game with 15 kills, two blocks and 29 digs. Lenore Basset also hit double digits with 11 kills and Stefanie Swanson recorded her second 30-dig performance of the afternoon.

 

The Highlanders fall to 10-18 overall and 2-8 in AMC play. They will be back in action next weekend at Malone College on October 27. Houghton will face Mt. Vernon Nazarene College at 2:00 pm and then play Malone College at 4:00 pm.
