Field Hockey Team Closes Regular Season With a Win

Emily Leonard scored her third goal of the season vs. U. of Scranton Saturday

Box Score

Houghton, N.Y.—The Houghton College field hockey team closed out its regular season by defeating the University of Scranton Royals 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Burke Field.

The Highlanders got two in the first half to take control of the game. Sarah Buckwalter followed up her hat trick yesterday by opening the scoring today about 15 minutes in. Ten minutes later it was Emily Leonard (above) who doubled the lead on a goalmouth scramble from a penalty corner. Amanda Brenon got the assist.

The Highlanders controlled play throughout, but the Royals got the first goal of the second half with just 9:35 left on a nice progression up the right side of the offense. Highlander goalkeeper Ashley Farr made the initial save, but Elizabeth Carugan gathered up the rebound and knocked it in to cut the lead to 2-1.

Royals Coach Colleen Mahon called a time out in an effort to rally the team, but it was the Highlanders who responded. Less than a minute later Ashley Hoffman scored off a corner on an assist from Brenon and that was the way the game ended, 3-1.

Before the game, the Highlanders honored three senior players—Ashley Pink, Kathleen Griego and Elizabeth Mueller—as they completed their Highlander careers.

Houghton’s third straight win closes their regular season at 9-9, while Scranton drops to 6-12.

The Highlanders will host a post-season tournament with Wells College and St. Vincent College on Friday and Saturday.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
