Box Score

Houghton, N.Y.—Senior Tyler Haggerty capped the Highlanders’ Senior Recognition Day with a second-half goal to tie the Cedarville University Yellow Jackets 1-1 at Burke Field on Saturday evening.

Cedarville scored first, just over five minutes into the game, on a set piece. Given a free kick from midfield, the Yellow Jackets sent a long ball to the top of the penalty area that was headed down but not cleared by the Houghton defense. Cedarville defender Kyle Segebart, who had come forward for the free kick, slammed home the loose ball to make it 1-0.

Throughout the remainder of the first half, though, it was the Highlanders who gradually took control of the game, winning most midfield battles and possessing the ball for larger amounts of time.

In the second half, Houghton created pressure from the opening kickoff and found the net just about five minutes in. Off a corner kick from senior Josiah Snelgrove, Haggerty, who had come forward from his central defender’s position to look for a header, found a loose ball instead and buried it to tie up the game.

For the rest of the half the Highlanders pressed, but were denied repeatedly.

In the first five minutes of overtime, Houghton created multiple chances, but couldn’t connect. Cedarville came back in the next five minutes to gain some possessions, but no one could break through. The second overtime period passed uneventfully and the game ended 1-1.

The Highlanders’ record is now 8-3-5, with all five ties being 1-1. The Yellow Jackets are 7-7-3.

Before the game the Highlanders honored five seniors who were ending their regular-season careers: Snelgrove, Haggerty, Ernie Walton, Andrew Gent and Kendal Stoltzfus.

Their careers aren’t over yet, though. Houghton will host an American Mideast Conference playoff game against rival Roberts Wesleyan College on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. with the winner advancing to NAIA regional play.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
