Highlander Volleyball Team Continues Slump

Canton, Oh.-  The Highlander volleyball team continued to struggle through this weekend falling to NAIA #14 ranked Mount Vernon Nazarene College 3-0 (20-30, 14-30, 26-30) and AMC North Division opponent Malone College 3-0 (17-30, 21-30, 31-33).

Houghton posed no threat to the high powered offense of the Mount Vernon Nazarene College Cougars,  who easily dispensed the Highlanders. Holly Motheral recorded seven kills and seven blocks. Joining her was Darby Emerson with seven kills and 17 digs. Stefanie Swanson led Houghton defensively with 11 digs for the match.

In the second match against Malone College, Houghton struggled early in the first two sets. It wasn't until the third set that the Highlanders made a tough push to take the set, only to fall short. Darby Emerson recorded a double-double for the match with 11 kills and 13 digs, Leah Scott chipped in ten kills and three blocks. Lenore Basset had 9 kills and Stefanie Swanson had 16 digs.

The Highlanders are back in action October 30 at American Mideast Conference North Division rival Roberts Wesleyan College. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
