Women's Soccer Lands First Recruit For 2007

HOUGHTON, N.Y. –  Lauren Haggerty has signed a national letter of intent to play soccer at Houghton College, Highlander coach David Lewis announced today.

Haggerty has been a cornerstone in her high school’s soccer program, becoming a varsity starter her freshman year and serving as team captain for two seasons. She has accumulated her share of awards and honors, having been recognized as a NJ Skyland Conference All-Star and in 2005 the Courier News "Players to Watch in the State of New Jersey". Haggerty has been hampered with two ACL injuries at the beginning of her Junior and Senior season's cutting short her High School career.

"I saw Lauren play last summer for her Club Team and I was impressed by her competitive, hard-working style," said Coach Lewis. "She has a good shot, brings a strong presence to the field and I anticipate that she will contribute immediately for us. The recovery from her second ACL surgery is almost complete and she should be in full strength soon."

"Lauren ranks as one of the best technical players on our team. She is very good at holding players off and distributes quickly to her teammates. She is one of the hardest workers when it comes to technical training and fitness," said Club Coach Michael Poller, FC Magic United.

Lauren is the daughter of Brent and Susan Haggerty. She anticipates majoring Biology/Pre-Physical Therapy

Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
