Houghton Women Drop Season Opener at Rio Tournament

(Rio Grande, Ohio)—The Houghton College women’s basketball team dropped its season opener 70-52 to host Rio Grande University at the Bevo Francis Tournament Friday evening.

Houghton took an early 7-1 lead, but shot just 18 percent from the field in the first half, falling behind 32-15 at the break.

“We had some first-half jitters,” said Highlanders Head Coach Skip Lord, “and we were outrebounded.” Rio enjoyed a 44-37 edge on the boards for the game.

Houghton did play well in the second half—the second half score was just 38-37 in Rio’s favor. “I’m pleased with their overall effort,” Lord said, “especially how they played in the second half.”

Ashley Dupler led all scorers with 16 and had 11 boards. Cassie Merrill had 10 points and five rebounds. Leah French had five points.

For Rio, Sarah Drabinski had 15 points and Britney Walker had 14, plus seven rebounds. Jasmine Richardson came off the bench and scored 12.

Houghton (0-1) will play Milligan College in the consolation game Saturday afternoon, while Rio (3-0) takes on Walsh for the championship. Walsh beat Milligan 77-74 earlier Friday.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
