Three Highlanders
Compete at National Meet

(Kenosha,
Wis.)—The Houghton College cross country team sent
three individuals to the National Association of
Intercollegiate Athletics’ national meet held at the
University of Wisconsin—Parkside on Saturday. Dan
Ballard (Syracuse, N.Y./Faith Heritage) finished 48th
among the 258 men while Kaitlan Fadden
(Poughkeepsie, N.Y./FDR High School) and Rachel
Rhodes (Salamanca, N.Y./Cattaraugus-Little Valley)
finished 92nd and 133rd,
respectively, among the 268 women.
The weather was cold—barely 38 degrees at race time.
Ballard was Houghton’s lone entrant for the men,
competing in his second cross country national
championship race. Starting the race in the top 15,
Ballard was able to run an excellent race through
the first seven kilometers. He has been struggling
with an injury throughout the cross-country season,
which has hampered his training. Ballard finished
with a time of 25:44.8.
Fadden and Rhodes made their first appearances at
the national meet. They found it hard to obtain a
good starting position and spent the first mile of
the race stuck in the mass of runners. They improved
throughout the remainder of the race, with Fadden
moving up to finish in 19:06.0 and Rhodes, also
dealing with an injury, coming in at 19:27.6.
Houghton College
has deep
and
solid
roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our
teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play
and
in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and
unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference
for the Kingdom
on campus, in Allegany County,
in the Northeast and
around
the world.
Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected
by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door
for Houghton to be a leader,
both in the Northeast and
nationally, in character education.
Through hands-on,
innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and
student-athletes
are working together to change the culture of sport and
to change our culture through sport.
