Houghton Women Fall to Walsh, 79-54

(North Canton, Ohio)—Cara Bedard had 19 points for Walsh University, which beat Houghton College in women’s basketball, 79-54.

“We struggled with defending their screens, especially inside,” said Skip Lord, head coach of the Highlanders. Walsh took advantage in the first half, shooting 58.6 percent from the field to take a 44-30 halftime lead.

“In the second half, we made adjustments inside,” said Lord, “and then they stepped out and started hitting threes.” Walsh went on to outscore Houghton by 11 in the second half.

Leah Seaman had 12 and Katie Berry added 11 for Walsh.

Houghton got balanced scoring—10 points from Lisa Skrypnik (pictured at right), and eight points each from Becky Kallal, Ashley Scudder and Leah French.

Skrypnik also led the team with a game-high eight rebounds; Ashley Dupler had seven.

“In the end, it was a tale of two halves,” Lord said. “The first half they beat us on the inside; the second half they beat us on the outside.”

The loss drops Houghton to 1-2, while Walsh evened its record at 3-3. The Highlanders play again Wednesday night, hosting Alfred University at the Nielsen Center. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
