Houghton Women Beat SUNY Canton

(Canton, N.Y.)—The Houghton College women’s basketball team beat SUNY Canton Friday night, 61-44 behind 13 points from Leah French and 11 from Ashley Dupler.

“It was a solid effort tonight,” said Skip Lord, head coach of the Highlanders. Lord’s team led just 28-22 at the half, but stepped it up in the second half, outscoring the Kangaroos 33-22.

Lord cited Dupler’s all-around game as one key. In addition to her scoring—she shot 5 of 10 from the field—she added 13 rebounds, four blocked shots and four steals.

Lord also praised the defensive effort of point guard Lisa Skrypnik. Skrypnik was given the defensive assignment of guarding one of SUNY Canton’s top scorers and drew two early charging fouls. Skrypnik also contributed seven points, eight rebounds and six assists.

The win improves Houghton’s record to 3-2; SUNY Canton is now 0-2. Houghton’s next game is Saturday afternoon at Paul Smith’s College.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
