Houghton Puts in the Effort But Falls to

                           Notre Dame, 58-69

Box Score

Houghton, NY – The Women’s basketball team was overmatched in experience but never gave up in their 58-69 loss to Notre Dame College. The Falcons are one of the top teams in the conference with an even 2-2 record, but the Highlanders battled hard to keep the game close.

The Highlanders were outscored by 14 points in the first half. The Falcons played smart basketball hitting a high percentage of shots and forcing turnovers on the Highlanders end. The second half was a completely different story for Houghton who stepped up their full court pressure and came back to outscore Notre Dame by 3 points.

Erika Forland (Fr. Huntingdon Station, NY) led Houghton in three categories earning 13 points, 3 assists, and 5 blocks. Leah French (Fr. Owego, NY) also had 13 points and earned 5 rebounds for the night. Rebounds were lead by Lisa Skrypnik (Fr. Albion, NY) who had 11. And Jessica Smith (Fr. Middleport, NY) was close to a double-double with 11 points and 8 rebounds.

Coach Lord is still optimistic with his young team for this season, “We fought hard in the second half to outplay Notre Dame. I believe that this game will make us a better team down the road.”

The leaders for Notre Dame College were Ashley Carney who had 18 points and Christine Hastings who earned 15 rebounds.

The Highlanders are now 7-7 overall and 3-3 in the AMC North Division. Houghton will look to improve both of their records on Friday, January 19th, when they travel to play AMC North Division opponent Geneva College at 5:30 PM.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
