Houghton Women
Crush Paul Smith’s, 55-11
(Paul Smiths,
N.Y.)—The Houghton College women’s basketball team crushed Paul Smith’s
College 55-11 Saturday afternoon behind 13 points from Leah French.
“They’re a
very young team,” said Skip Lord, Houghton’s head coach. “So our plan going
in was to limit the time our starters played.” Lord said that Houghton’s top
six players started each half, but played less than ten minutes.
“We went
with our younger kids and role players,” he said. “It was an opportunity for
them to get real game experience.”
Even with
that plan, Paul Smith’s was overmatched, scoring just six points in the
first half as Houghton went out to a 23-point halftime lead.
The second
half didn’t get much better for Paul Smith’s, as they shot just one of 11.
For the game, they shot just 14.3 percent from the field, and had 31
turnovers.
Houghton’s
Kara Schrader had nine points and a team-high seven rebounds. Shannon
Daugherty had eight points. Jody Tripler had six rebounds and six steals.
Jenny
Stetson led Paul Smith’s with six points. Bethany Garretson added two points
and seven rebounds.
Houghton
improved its record to 4-2. Houghton’s next game is Tuesday evening at the
Nielsen Center, with a 6:00 p.m. tipoff time.
