Five Women’s Soccer Team Members Honored for

                                Scholarship

HOUGHTON, N.Y. — Five members of the Houghton College women’s soccer team have been honored for their academic performance by earning their way onto the prestigious Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete list.

The designation as a scholar-athlete is open only to juniors and seniors who have achieved and maintained a 3.5 or better grade point average.

From the Houghton women’s team, the following players were honored: Rebecca Buszka, Rebecca Dix, Andrea Duryea, Ashley LaBoda and Rebecca Smith.

“These young women are to be especially commended for their ability to achieve academically while at the same time excelling on the field of play.” said David Lewis, head coach of the team. “It takes a special dedication and discipline to be able to accomplish what they have done by both earning a berth in the national tournament and at the same time being in the top echelon in the classroom.”

Buszka is a junior midfielder from Lancaster, N.Y., where she attended Lancaster High School. She is majoring in inclusive childhood education.

Dix is a junior from LaGrangeville, N.Y., and attended Houghton Academy. She is a defender who is majoring in biology with the intention of pursuing physical therapy as a career. During the season Dix had one assist.

Duryea, from Washington, N.J., is a biology/pre-physical therapy major as well. A senior midfielder, Duryea scored one goal and added three assists during the season.

LaBoda, a senior midfielder, comes from Mexico, N.Y., where she attended Mexico High School. She has a double major in French and Spanish; during the season she had one assist.

Smith is a senior who spent time as both a midfielder and a defender during the season, when she had three goals and six assists. Smith is from Carlisle, Pa., and is majoring in childhood education.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
