(Houghton, N.Y.)—Two members of the Houghton College men’s soccer team have been honored for their academic performance. Andrew Gent and Ernie Walton were named Daktronics Scholar-Athletes by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

To earn the NAIA Scholar-Athlete title, students must be juniors or seniors with a grade point average of 3.5 or better.

“We are proud that Ernie and Andrew have achieved this recognition,” said Matthew Webb, head coach of the Houghton College men’s soccer team, “To be able to balance achievement in the classroom with accomplishment on the field of play is difficult, and they have done it well.”

Gent, a senior defender from Hanover, Pa., is majoring in mathematics.

Walton is also a senior; he played midfield this year and tallied one assist. The Zionsville, Pa., native is a business major.

The Highlander men went 9-3-5 this year, advancing to the semifinals of the American Mideast Conference tournament before losing to conference champion Rio Grande University, 3-0.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
