Highlanders Sign Women’s Soccer Recruit

(Houghton, N.Y.)—Houghton College women’s soccer coach David Lewis has announced that Keeler Topping (Pittsford, N.Y. / Pittsford Mendon) has signed a national letter of intent to play at Houghton College.

Topping was Mendon High’s Most Improved Player in 2005 and earned the Most Hustle Award in both 2005 and 2006. She was the team’s captain in 2007, her senior campaign. Topping was named to the 2007 All-Greater Rochester Girls Soccer Team after leading Mendon to the Section V Class A title and a state runner-up finish. She was selected defensive MVP of the section final match.

“Keeler attended our summer soccer camp and I was impressed by her play and character,” said Lewis. “She has a great work ethic and a caring nature. She is a great fit for Houghton and I am delighted to have her as a part of our soccer program.”

“Keeler is the epitome of what a student-athlete should be,” said Janet Wright, Topping’s high school coach. “She is the ideal teammate as she leads by example both on and off the soccer field, never seeking any self-gratification or wanting to draw attention to herself. She puts her teammates first and truly cares about their well-being. Her attitude motivates others, which makes her a natural leader and role model. Keeler is well-respected by her teammates, peers, teachers and coaches. Additionally, Keeler is one of the top players on the Pittsford Mendon team and in Monroe County as well as one of the most humble players I have had the opportunity to coach.”

Topping is the daughter of John and Claudia Topping of Pittsford, N.Y. She anticipates majoring in elementary education at Houghton.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
