Houghton to Host Counselor’s Classic

(Houghton, N.Y.)—Houghton College will host boys’ and girls’ basketball teams from five area schools for the third annual Counselor’s Classic basketball tournament Friday and Saturday, December 28-29 at the Nielsen Center.

The tournament, held under the auspices of the Allegany County School Guidance Counselor’s Association (ACCA), raises money for scholarships to area students for use at the college of their choice.

The girls will start play on Friday, December 28, with a 2:45 tip-off between Olean’s Archbishop Walsh and Fillmore Central School in a game sponsored by Community Bank. The Cuba-Rushford and Whitesville girls will follow, at 4:30, sponsored by the Allegany County Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse.

Two boys’ games will follow on Friday evening, at 6:30 and 8 p.m. Campbell-Savona will take on Whitesville in the early game, sponsored by Nathan Petroleum. The final contest of the day will feature Cuba-Rushford against Fillmore. The game is sponsored by Fillmore and Cuba Pharmacies.

Saturday will feature the consolation games early on and the championship games in the evening. The girls’ consolation tips off at 2:45 in a game sponsored by Houghton College. The boys’ consolation game is sponsored by Jamestown Community College and is set for 4:30.

Dresser-Rand is sponsoring the girls’ championship game, tipping off at 6:30. The boys’ championship will follow, at 8:00, with the Seneca Battalion of the ROTC as sponsor.

Tickets for each day’s games are available at the Nielsen Center, with free parking provided by Houghton College.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
