Pioneer Central Soccer
Star Signs With Houghton
(Arcade, N.Y.)—Erin
Asquith has signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Houghton
College. Asquith, a goalkeeper from Arcade, N.Y., has led Pioneer Central
School to consecutive ECIC Class A semifinalist finishes the last two years.
“Erin is an
unbelievably self-motivated and driven scholar athlete who not only leads
but inspires by example,” says her coach (and father), Frank Asquith.
Her father is
not the only one who thinks Asquith’s a superlative player, though. She was
a Big 30 First Team selection in 2007, when she was also named to the ECIC
First Team. She was her team’s MVP for the 2007 season and was named one of
the top three goalkeepers in western New York. Asquith was a First Team ECIC
All-Star selection in 2006 as well, and made the Big 30 list that year as
well. She had 29 career shutouts.
As a high
school athlete, Asquith competed in track and field as well, specializing in
discus and shot put. “Erin is one of the hardest working athletes I have
ever coached.” says Mary Doud, her track and field coach at Pioneer. “Her
desire to learn about her events and to constantly improve was evident in
what she achieved throughout the season.”
Houghton’s
women’s soccer coach David Lewis is counting on that ability to improve as
Asquith moves to the collegiate level. “Erin has tremendous athleticism,” he
says. “She has great potential to be a highly successful collegiate
goalkeeper and I am looking forward to her addition to the soccer program.”
Asquith is the daughter of Frank
and Mary Sue Asquith of Arcade, N.Y. She intends to major in Physical
Education with a minor in Mathematics at Houghton.
Houghton
finished the 2007 season with a 13-3-3 record and won the American Mideast
Conference, North Division (going 7-0-0 in the division). It was the team’s
14th conference or divisional title in the past 15 years. They advanced to
the NAIA Regional Final Four for the 15th consecutive year, and
captured the Region IX championship. They advanced to the Sweet 16 of the
NAIA national tournament, held in Daytona Beach, Fla. It was the
Highlanders’ fifth consecutive national tournament appearance.
Houghton College
has deep
and
solid
roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our
teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play
and
in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and
unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference
for the Kingdom
on campus, in Allegany County,
in the Northeast and
around
the world.
Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected
by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door
for Houghton to be a leader,
both in the Northeast and
nationally, in character education.
Through hands-on,
innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and
student-athletes
are working together to change the culture of sport and
to change our culture through sport.
