Box Score

Cleveland, OH The Highlanders pulled off a big road win with some gutsy defense against AMC North Division Notre Dame College 76-62. The Highlanders started the game rolling the Falcons for an early 10 point lead.

The Highlanders frustrated the Falcons taking away their quick transition game and double teaming in the post. They also held the Falcon’s to a season low 9% shooting from the 3 point line and 31% from the field.

The Highlanders converted off every turnover created astounding the Falcons (15-7) on their home court. The Highlanders shot 50% behind the arch led by Leah French (Fr. Owego, NY) who found her shooting touch going 5-7 behind the line keeping the Falcons at bay with a comfortable 10 point lead. Though the Highlanders lost the battle on the boards 44-48, they made the big stops and grabbed the big rebounds when needed. Six Highlanders recorded 5 or more rebounds for the game.

Leah French (Fr. Owego, NY) led Houghton with an outstanding 27 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals, 4 assists. Tonight, French was 5 for 7 from the 3-Point line and 9 for 17 from the field.  Following her was Cassie Merrill (Jr. Houghton, NY) who earned 13 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists for the night.  Erika Forland (Fr. Huntington Station, NY) also earned 13 points, 5 rebounds and Ashley Scudder (Jr. Fredonia, NY) who had 12 points and 8 rebounds.

“The juniors served as good leaders tonight,” said Highlanders Head Coach Skip Lord.  “Our other keys to victory were offensive production and strong man to man defense. The women played well against a tough team.”

The Highlanders are now 9-9 overall and 4-4 in the AMC North Division. The next game for Houghton is another AMC North Division match at home on January 30th vs. Roberts Wesleyan College with the tip off at 6:00 PM.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
