Houghton Holds Home Court To Defeat Rival Roberts

Box Score

Houghton, NY – The women’s basketball team experienced a thrilling victory for a crowd clad in purple and gold as they defeated Roberts Wesleyan College 57-49. Houghton College is celebrating Purple & Gold Week and the women’s basketball team made sure to keep fans on the edge of their seats in this tight battle.

Captain Ashley Scudder (Jr. Fredonia, NY) stepped up this evening and led the team with her intensity as well as her play. Scudder earned 20 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists for the evening.  Following her was Leah French (Fr. Owego, NY) who had 14 points, 5 rebounds and Erika Forland (Fr. Huntington Station, NY) who earned 13 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals.

Roberts came to Houghton with only six players due to players breaking team rules and serving suspensions.  But these six players played with heart.  “Roberts had the emotional momentum coming into the game and they played aggressively,” Coach Lord commended Roberts.  “But our defense made the difference tonight.  We played well on the boards. The other key to our win was Scudder who led the team and encouraged everyone else.”

The Highlanders are now 10-9 overall and 5-4 in the AMC North Division. Houghton play at home on February 2nd vs. Point Park University with the tip off at 8:00 PM.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
