Highlanders Finish
Strong Over Carlow University
Celtics, 54-50

The
Women’s Basketball team started their road trip in Pennsylvania with a win over
AMC North Division Opponent Carlow University Celtics today, 54-50. The
Highlanders were led by Erika Forland (Fr.
Huntington Station, NY) &
Becky Kallal (Jr. West
Chester, PA) who each scored 16 points today.
The Highlanders got off to a slow start
offensively and found themselves down 13 points, 13-26(5:46). The women's team
could not find any rhythm and were plagued by 8 turnovers, shooting only 24%
from the floor in the first half. The score at half time was 32-16 for Carlow
University Celtics.
The Highlanders would need to make a run early in
the second half and they did just that. Coming out of the gates hitting their
first 7 out of 8 shots pulling the Highlanders within four points 30-34 (13:53).
Defensively the Highlanders forced three consecutive turnovers on the Celtics
taking the lead with a jumper from
Erika Forland (Fr.
Huntington Station, NY) 39-38 (7:43).
The game went back and forth until the four minute
mark when the Highlanders gained full control of the lead, 46-45 (3:50). The
Highlanders finished the game with Forland hitting 5-5 from the free throw line
securing a four point win, 54-50.
The Highlanders showed an improved effort shooting
over 61% from the field in the second half, 43% overall for the game. The
Highlanders need to improve from the free throw line shooting a disappointing
50%.
The Highlanders put two players in double digit's
Erika Forland (Fr.
Huntington Station, NY) who went 5-10 FG, 6-10 FT, grabbed 9 rebounds, 16
points, 3 blocks and 2 steals.
Becky Kallal (Jr. West
Chester, PA) scored 16 points off 7-17 shooting and grabbed 4 rebounds.
Leah
French (Fr. Owego, NY) also chipped 9 points for the Highlanders.
With that win the women
to 2-1 in AMC North Division play and back to .500 at 5-5 overall for the
season. The women's next AMC North Division game is at Point Park on January 6th
starting at 2:00 pm.
